Abstract :
JAERIestablishedthesafetydesignphilosophyoftheHTTRbasedonthatofcurrentreactorssuchasLWRinJapan,consideringinherentsafetyfeaturesoftheHTTR.Thestrategyofdefenseindepthwasimplementedsothatthesafetyengineeringfunctionssuchascontrolofreactivity,removalofresidualheatandconfinementoffissionproductsshallbewellperformedtoensuresafety.However,unliketheLWR,theinherentdesignfeaturesofthehigh-temperaturegas-cooledreactor(HTGR)enablestheHTTRmeetstringentregulatorycriteriawithoutmuchdependenceonactivesafetysystems.Ontheotherhand,thesafetyinanaccidenttypicaltotheHTGRsuchasthedepressurizationaccidentinitiatedbyaprimarypiperuptureshallbeensured.ThesafetydesignphilosophyoftheHTTRconsiderstheseuniquefeaturesappropriatelyandisexpectedtobethebasisforfutureJapaneseHTGRs. ThispaperdescribesthesafetydesignphilosophyandsafetyevaluationprocedureoftheHTTRespeciallyfocusingonuniqueconsiderationstotheHTTR.Also,experiencesobtainedfromanHTTRsafetyreviewandR&DneedsforestablishingthesafetyphilosophyforthefutureHTGRsarereported.
