Abstract :
Simulatedlossofcoolantaccident(LOCA)testsonZircaloy-4claddingwerecarriedouttoevaluatethethermalshockpropertyduringtheinjectionofemergencycorecoolant.AZircaloy-4specimenwasoxidizedinasteamenvironmentbetween1000and1250°Cfollowedbyafloodingofthecoolingwater.Afterthetest,theductilityofthethermallyembrittledspecimenwasmeasuredbyaring-compressiontestandamicrostructuralanalysiswascarriedout.Theresultsshowedthatthethresholdequivalentcladdingreacted(ECR)valuetocauseafailurewashigherthantheconventional17%criterioncalculatedbytheBaker–Justequation.Aresidualmetalthicknessunder0.3mmaswellasaring-compressionductilitybelow0.2mmforafractureiseffectivetoassessthethermalshockembrittlementofZircaloy-4inanaxiallyunrestrained,oreveninarestrainedcondition.
