Abstract
AjointresearchprojectwascarriedoutintheEUFifthFrameworkProgramme,concerninghydrogenriskinanuclearpowerplant.Thegoalswere:Firstly,tocreateanewdatabaseofresultsonhydrogencombustionexperimentsintheslowtoturbulentcombustionregimes.Secondly,tovalidatethepartnersCFDandlumpedparametercodesontheexperimentaldata,andtoevaluatesuitableparametersetsforapplicationcalculations.Thirdly,toconductabenchmarkexercisebyapplyingthecodestothefullscaleanalysisofapostulatedhydrogencombustionscenarioinalightwaterreactorcontainmentafteracoremeltaccident.Thepaperdescribestheworkprogrammeoftheprojectandthepartnersactivities.Significantprogresshasbeenmadeintheexperimentalarea,wheretestseriesinmediumandlargescalefacilitieshavebeencarriedoutwiththefocusonspecificeffectsofscale,multi-compartentgeometry,heatlossesandventing.ThedatawereusedforthevalidationofthepartnersCFDandlumpedparametercodes,whichincludedblindpredictivecalculationsandpre-andpost-testintercomparisonexercises.Finally,abenchmarkexercisewasconductedbyapplyingthecodestothefullscaleanalysisofahydrogencombustionscenario.Thecomparisonandassessmentoftheresultsofthevalidationphaseandofthechallengingcontainmentcalculationexerciseallowsadeepinsightinthequality,capabilitiesandlimitsoftheCFDandthelumpedparametertoolswhicharecurrentlyinuseatvariousresearchlaboratories.
