Abstract :
ThewidespreadconcernaboutradioactivewastemanagementhaspromotedinterestduringthelastdecadeforthepotentialroleofPartitioningandTransmutationstrategies,inordertoalleviatetheburdenonfuturedeepgeologicalrepositories.Thephysicsoftransmutationallowstopoint-outpreferentialapproaches,e.g.,basedontheuseofafastneutronspectrum.ThepracticalimplementationofPartitioningandTransmutationimpliesthedevelopmentofsophisticatedtechnologiesandcanbemorerealisticifseeninaregionalcontext.Someexampleswillbegiventoillustratethe“regional”approach,andsomeconsiderationswillbemadeontheuseofAcceleratorDrivenSystems(ADS),intheframeofaprogressivestrategyfrompresentnuclearpowerfleetstofuturesystems,asstudied,e.g.,intheframeoftheGENERATION-IVinitiative.
