Abstract :
Large-scale,bubblyplumeshavebeensimulatedbyacommercialCFDcodeusingvariousmodelsandcorrelationsfortheinterfacialforcesbetweenthephasesandforbubble-inducedturbulence.Steady-statesimulationresultsarecomparedwithtime-averageplumebehaviourobtainedfromanovelexperimentalseriesonlarge-scalebubbleplumes.Numericaleffectslikee.g.numericalschemeandgriddependenceareexaminedandtheimportantissueofplumefluctuationsisaddressed.Itisshownthatitisnecessarytoincludeanappropriatemodelforthelateralinterfacialforceslikeliftandturbulentdispersiontoobtainthecorrectspreadingoftheplumeobservedexperimentally.Includingthoseandusingstandarddragcoefficient,theagreementwiththeexperimentsisreasonable.Thedifferenttwo-phaseturbulencemodelsareeitherinappropriateorhaveverylittleinfluenceonthesimulationresults,whichdonotpredictthegasvelocityeverywhereintheplumecorrectly.
