Abstract :
AnewreactorconceptunderdevelopmentatAECLhasthemaindesignobjectiveofachievinga50%reductioninunitenergycostrelativetoexistingreactordesigns.Theapproachbuildsonusingexistingoperatingsupercriticalwater(SCW)experienceandturbinesincoal-firedpowerplants.
ThisSCWCANDU®researchincludesinvestigatingheattransferandpressuredropatsupercriticalconditionsusingcarbondioxideasamodellingfluidasacheaperandfasteralternativetousingSCW.Therefore,theobjectivesaretoassesstheworkthatwasdonewiththesupercriticalcarbondioxideandtounderstandthespecificsofheattransferattheseconditions.
Ourexhaustiveliteraturesearch,whichincludedover450papers,showedthatthemajorityofexperimentaldatawereobtainedinverticaltubes,somedatainhorizontaltubesandjustfewinotherflowgeometries.
Threemodesofheattransferatsupercriticalpressureshavebeenrecorded:(1)so-callednormalheattransfer,(2)improvedheattransfer,characterizedbyhigher-than-expectedheattransfercoefficient(HTC)valuesthaninthenormalheattransferregimeand(3)deterioratedheattransfer,characterizedbylower-than-expectedHTCvaluesthaninthenormalheattransferregime.
