Abstract :
ThispaperevaluatestheapplicabilityofeddycurrentinversiontechniquestothesizingofdefectsinInconelweldswithroughsurfaces.Forthispurpose,aplateInconelweldspecimen,whichmodelstheweldingofastubtubeinaboilingwaternuclearreactorisfabricated,andartificialnotchesmachinedintothespecimen.Eddycurrentinspectionsusingsixdifferenteddycurrentprobesareconductedandefficiencieswereevaluatedforthesixprobesforweldinspection.Itisrevealedthatifsuitableprobesareapplied,anInconelwelddoesnotcauselargenoiselevelsduringeddycurrentinspectionseventhoughthesurfaceoftheweldisrough.Finally,reconstructionofthenotchesisperformedusingeddycurrentsignalsmeasuredusingtheuniformeddycurrentprobethatshowedthebestresultsamongthesixprobesinthisstudy.Asimplifiedconfigurationisproposedinordertoconsiderthecomplicatedconfigurationoftheweldedspecimeninnumericalsimulations.Whilereconstructedprofilesofthenotchesareslightlylargerthanthetrueprofiles,quitegoodagreementsareobtainedinspiteofthesimpleapproximationoftheconfiguration,whichrevealsthateddycurrenttestingwouldbeanefficientnon-destructivetestingmethodforthesizingofdefectsinInconelwelds.
