  • Abstract
    TheSIRIUS-Nfacilitywasdesignedandconstructedforhighlyaccuratesimulationofcore-wideandregionalinstabilitiesofanaturalcirculationBWR.Areal-timesimulationwasperformedinthedigitalcontrollerformodalpointkineticsofreactorneutronicsandfuel-rodconductiononthebasisofmeasuredvoidfractionsinreactorcoresectionsofthethermal-hydraulicloop.Stabilityexperimentswereconductedforawiderangeofthermal-hydraulicconditions,powerdistributions,andfuelrodtimeconstants,includingthenominaloperatingconditionsofatypicalnaturalcirculationBWR.Theresultsshowthatthereisasufficientlywidestabilitymarginundernominaloperatingconditions,evenwhenvoid-reactivityfeedbackistakenintoaccount.Thestabilityexperimentswereextendedtoincludeahypotheticalparameterrange(double-voidreactivitycoefficientandinletcoresubcoolingincreasedbyafactorof3.6)inordertoidentifyinstabilityphenomena.TheregionalinstabilitywasclearlydemonstratedwiththeSIRIUS-Nfacility,whenthefuelrodtimeconstantmatchestheoscillationperiodofdensitywaveoscillations.
