Abstract :
Crackinitiationenduranceshavebeendeterminedfora1CrMoVrotorsteelinuniaxialservicecyclethermo-mechanicalfatigue(TMF)testsformulatedtosimulatearangeofsteamturbinestartcycleswithamaximumtemperatureof565°C.TheexperimentaldetailsfortheseTMFtestsaredescribed.
PosttestinspectionhasbeenemployedtocharacterisetheassociatedthermalfatiguedamagemechanismsforthesteelwhichareobservedtobedependentonthemagnitudeofthethermaltransientintheTMFcycle.
Thelowestresistancetothermalfatiguedamagedevelopmentoccursinthesetestswhentheconditionsdeterminethattherateofcreepdamageaccumulationbelowthesurfaceexceedstherateoffatiguecrackdevelopmentatthesurface.
