Abstract :
Atime-dependentreliabilityevaluationofatwo-looppassivedecayheatremoval(DHR)systemwasperformedaspartoftheiterativedesignprocessforahelium-cooledfastreactor.ThesystemwasmodeledusingRELAP5-3D.TheuncertaintiesininputparameterswereassessedandwerepropagatedthroughthemodelusingLatinhypercubesampling.AnimportantfindingwasthediscoverythatthesmallerpressurelossthroughtheDHRheatexchangerthanthroughthecorewouldmaketheflowtobypassthecorethroughoneDHRloop,iftwoloopsoperatedinparallel.ThisfindingisawarningagainstmodelingonlyonelumpedDHRloopandassumingthatnofthemwillremoventimesthedecaypower.Sensitivityanalysesrevealedthattherearevaluesofsomeinputparametersforwhichfailuresareveryunlikely.Thecalculatedconditional(i.e.,giventheLOCA)failureprobabilitywasdeemedtobetoohighleadingtotheidentificationofseveraldesignchangestoimprovesystemreliability.Thisstudyisanexampleofthekindsofinsightsthatcanbeobtainedbyincludingareliabilityassessmentinthedesignprocess.ItisdifferentfromtheusualuseofPSAindesign,whichcomparesdifferentsystemconfigurations,becauseitfocusesonthethermal–hydraulicperformanceofasafetyfunction.
