Abstract :
Componentsoffastbreederreactor(FBR)plantswillbesubjectedtolargethermalload,andprogressivedeformationwithloadingcycles(ratcheting)andcreep-fatiguedamageshouldbeconsideredintheirdesign.Toclarifytheeffectofratchetingonfatigueandcreep-fatiguelife,aseriesoffatigueandcreep-fatiguetestscoupledwithstrainprogresswerecarriedoutfor316FRstainlesssteel.Itwasfoundthattensileratchetingdecreasesthefailurelifetoalargeextentatsmallstrainrange,whilecompressiveratchetingdoesnotdecreasethefailurelife.Measurementofstriationintervalsonfracturesurfaceshowedsmallinfluenceofstrainincrementonthecrackpropagationrate,suggestingthatthemaincauseofthelifereductionisthedecreaseinthecrackinitiationlife.Itwasalsofoundthatfailurelifeinvariousconditionsiscorrelatedwellwithaproductofstrainrangeandtensilepeakstress.
