Abstract
TheSystemBasedCodeconceptproposedbyAsadaetal.[Asada,Y.,Tashimo,M.,Ueta,M.,2002a.SystemBasedCode—PrincipalConcept.Proc.ICONE10,22730;Asada,Y.,Tashimo,M.,Ueta,M.,2002b.SystemBasedCode—BasicStructure.Proc.ICONE10,22731]intendstorealizemarginexchange,inordertooptimizedesign.Thispaperpresentspreliminarycalculationofmarginexchangebetweenmaterialstrengthandtheaccuracyandfrequencyofinserviceinspection(ISI),takingareactorvesselofafastbreederreactor,ofwhichdominantfailuremodeiscreep-fatigue,asanexample.Theoriginaldesignisastructureofforgedringsof316FR,materialwithsuperiorcreepstrength.AlternativedesignsuseeitherType304stainlesssteelorweldedstructureof316FRplates,leadingtoincreasedfailureprobabilitycomparedtotheoriginaldesign.Theaccuracyandfrequencynecessarytocompensatethisincreaseoffailureprobabilitywasestimated.ResultsenvisionedmarginexchangebetweenmaterialstrengthandISIunderpracticalconditions.Sophisticationoftheproceduretocalculatefailureprobabilitywillensuretheapplicationoftheconceptofmarginexchangetopracticaldesign.
