Abstract :
Validationsimulationsarepresentedforturbulentflowinastaggeredtubebank,geometrysimilartothelowerplenumofagas-cooledhightemperaturereactor.Steady2DRANSresultsarecomparedtounsteady2DRANSresultsandexperiment.Theunsteadycalculationsaccountforthefactthatnonturbulentfluctuations(duetovortex-shedding)arepresentintheflow.Theunsteadycomputationsareshowntopredictthemeanvariablesandthetotalshearstressquitewell.Previousworkers’resultsindicatethat3Dsimulationsareneededtoobtainreasonableagreement;presentresultsindicate2Dissufficient.BestpracticesarebasedonrequirementsfortheASMEJournalofFluidsEngineering.
