Abstract :
Intheframeworkofthe5thEU-FWPprojectECORAthecapabilitiesofCFDsoftwarepackagesforsimulatingflowsinthecontainmentofnuclearreactorswasevaluated.FourcodeswereassessedusingtwobasictestsinthePANDAfacilityaddressingthetransportofgasesinamulti-compartmentgeometry.TheassessmentincludedafirstattempttouseBestPracticeGuidelines(BPGs)fortheanalysisoflong,large-scale,transientproblems.Duetothelargecomputationaloverheadoftheanalysis,theBPGscouldnotfullybeapplied.ItwasthusconcludedthattheapplicationoftheBPGstofullcontainmentanalysisisoutofreachwiththecurrentlyavailablecomputerpower.Ontheotherhand,CFDcodesusedwithasufficientlydetailedmeshseemtobecapabletogivereliableanswersonissuesrelevantforcontainmentsimulationusingstandardtwo-equationturbulencemodels.Developmentonturbulencemodelsisconstantlyongoing.Ifitturnsoutthatadvanced(andmorecomputationallyintensive)turbulencemodelsmaynotbeneeded,theuseoftheBPGsfor‘certified’simulationscouldbecomefeasiblewithinarelativelyshorttime.
