Abstract
Inthisvalidationworktwoturbulencemodels(k–ɛandSSTmodel)andtwogrids(afinerhybridgridandatetrahedralcoarsergrid)areconsideredinordertomodelheliumreleaseanddispersion.SimulationresultsarecomparedagainstanexperimentofjetreleasephenomenaintheBattelleModelContainmentfacility(BMC),amulti-compartmentfacilitywithatotalvolumeofabout560m3.Intheselectedtest,HYJETJx7,heliumwasreleasedintothecontainmentataspeedof42m/soveratimeof200s.Althoughthek–ɛmodelisthemostcommonlyusedturbulencemodelinmostComputationalFluidDynamics(CFD)applications,itdoesnotprovidethemostaccuratepredictionsforthisapplication.AlternativelytheSSTturbulencemodelhasbeenemployedgivingmoreaccurateresults.ThisinvestigationprovidesafurtherconfirmationthatthevalidationofcommercialCFDcodesisalwaysrequiredinordertoselectthemoresuitablephysicalmodelsandcomputationalgridsforeachspecificapplication.
