Abstract
Thepaperdiscussesfirstcurrentcomputationaltrendsrelatedtoreactorsafetyproblemsanddevelopmentsneeded,aswellastheneedfornewkindsofmuchmoredetailedexperimentaldataforthevalidationofthenewmethodsandcodes.ThenumerousbubblyflowexperimentsconductedduringthelastdecadeatPSIarethenreviewedandputinperspectivewithregardstotheneedsoftheanalysts.Thelatestexperimentsproducedfirst-of-a-kindsetsofexperimentaldatafrombubblyplumesandjets.Someofthesedatawereconditionallyensembleorphaseaveragedtoseparatetheeffectsoflarge-scalemeanderingandoscillationsorcoherentstructuresfromthetime-dependentsmall-scaleeffects;thentheReynoldsstresstermscouldbeproperlyidentified.Thelargedatasetsthathavebeencreatedcanbefurtherminedtoextractadditionalinformationforthetwo-phaseflowanalyst.ThecompanionanalyticaldevelopmentsandsimulationsofbubblyflowswithRANSandLESmethodsarediscussed.LESmethodsareneededtoovercomesomeofthebasiclimitationsofRANSsimulations.
