Abstract :
ThispaperdescribestheresultsoffatiguestudiesoncarbonsteelpipingmaterialsandcomponentsofIndianPressurizedHeavyWaterReactors(PHWRs).Thepipingcomponentsincludepipesandelbows,ofouterdiameter219mm,324mmand406mm,madeofcarbonsteel(SA333Gr.6grade)material.Testsonactualpipesandelbowswithpartthroughnotchwerecarriedouttostudythebehaviourofcrackgrowthundercyclicloadingfordifferentpipesizes,notchaspectratios,stressratios,etc.Duringthetests,numbersofcyclesforcrackinitiationfrombluntnotchwererecordedwithanaccuracyof0.1mm.Inconjunctionwithcomponenttests,theexperimentalstudieswerealsoconductedonstandardspecimenstounderstandtheeffectofdifferentvariablessuchassize(thickness),typeofspecimenandcomponents(elbowandpipe),welding,stressratio,notchorientationonfatiguecrackgrowthrate.Thefatiguecrackgrowthcurve(da/dNversusΔK)obtainedfromthree-pointbendspecimenandpipewascomparedwiththatgiveninASMESectionXI.Thecomparisonshowsthatda/dNversusΔKcurvesobtainedfromthespecimenandpipetestsarenearlysame.Theanalyticalpredictionsforcrackinitiationandcrackgrowthforthetestedcomponentswerecomparedwithexperimentalresults.Suchcomparisonsvalidatethemodelingprocedureforcrackinitiationandgrowth.
