Abstract :
Theconvectiveheattransferforturbulentflowthroughrodbundlesrepresentativeofnuclearfuelrodsusedinpressurizedwaterreactorsisexamined.Therodbundlesconsistofasquarearrayofparallelrodsthatareheldonaconstantpitchbysupportgridsspacedaxiallyalongtherodbundle.Split-vanepairsupportgrids,whichcreateswirlingflowintherodbundle,aswellasdiscandstandardsupportgridsareinvestigated.Single-phaseconvectiveheattransfercoefficientsaremeasuredforflowdownstreamofsupportgridsinarodbundle.Therodsareheatedusingdirectresistanceheating,andabulkaxialflowofairisusedtocooltherodsintherodbundle.Airisusedastheworkingfluidinsteadofwatertoreducethepowerrequiredtoheattherodbundle.Resultsindicateheattransferenhancementforupto10hydraulicdiametersdownstreamofthesupportgrids.Ageneralcorrelationisdevelopedtopredicttheheattransferdevelopmentdownstreamofsupportgrids.Inaddition,circumferentialvariationsinheattransfercoefficientsresultinhotstreaksthatdevelopontherodsdownstreamofsplit-vanepairsupportgrids.
