Abstract :
ThecapabilitiesofthenuclearsystemtransientcodesTRACEandRELAP5tomodelcoupledtwo-phaseflowandpressurewavepropagationsinapipeareassessedbyanalyzingtheUMSICHTPPPcavitationwaterhammerexperiments329and135aftervalveclosure.Time-dependentpressure,flowbehaviour,andthegenerationandcollapseofvaporbubblesatthevalveandthefirstbridgearediscussed.Weshowthatbothcodesareabletomodeltheflowbehaviourofthewaterhammerforthehighpressureandhightemperaturecase329(initially10–13barand420K),howevercondensationheattransferforthebasecaseneededtobeincreasedinordertoaccuratelymodelthemagnitudeofthefirstpressureexcursion.TheexperimentalbroadeninganddampingofthesubsequentpressurepeaksbyFluid-StructureInteraction(FSI)phenomenaarisingfromtheinteractionoftheflowwiththevibrationsofthepipingstructurearenotconsideredinthemodelingresults.Forthelowerpressureandtemperaturecase135(initially1–4barand294K),theTRACEcodeprovidesagoodapproximationofthepropagationofthepressurewaveandthevoidfractionbehaviour,alreadywithbasecaseconditions,whileRELAP5overpredictsthevaporgenerationalongthepipeand,asaresult,considerablyunderpredictsthepressureamplitudesandoverpredictsthewaterhammerfrequency.
