Abstract :
Thiscasestudyproducesthescenarioearthquakesforanexamplenuclearpowerplant(NPP)siteandsuggeststheeffectiveseismiccapacityofsafety-relatedequipmentandcomponentswhichsignificantlycontributetoacoredamagetoimprovetheseismicsafetyofanexistingNPPbyusingaprobabilisticsafetyassessment.Theresponsespectraforthescenarioearthquakesshowgreaterspectralaccelerationsthanthoseforthedesignresponsespectruminthefrequencyrangehigherthanabout12Hz.InordertoimprovetheseismicsafetyofanexampleNPP,theeffectsoftheseismiccapacityofsafety-relatedequipmentandcomponentsonthecoredamagefrequency(CDF)areinvestigated,andtheireffectiveseismiccapacitiesaredetermined.TheresultsofthecasestudyshowthatanincreaseoftheseismiccapacityoftheequipmentreducestheCDFconsiderably.Theeffectiveseismiccapacitiesforthedieselgenerator,offsitepower,condensatestoragetankandbatteryrackaredeterminedas0.84,0.35,0.63and0.63g,respectively.
