Abstract :
Experimentsinvestigatingpost-LOCArefloodgenerallyindicatelittlecoherencetofuelpinballooning,andanabsenceofsignificantblockagesandun-coolableregionsofthecore.Computationalmodellingisunabletopredictthis;theusual‘representativepin’modelsneithertakeintoaccounttheheterogeneityofthecore,norincorporatethedynamiccouplingbetweenthechangingcoregeometry,andtheflowpathstakenbythecoolant.Inthispaperwepresentacompositemodel,abletotreatdistinctpinsmechanistically,andabletoincorporatetheir(distinct)swellingbehaviourintothethermal–hydraulicmodelofthereflood,allowingthecoolingofapintobedirectlyaffectedbythedeformationofitselfanditsneighbours.
