Abstract :
Themegawattpilotexperiment(MEGAPIE)hasbeenlaunchedbysixEuropeaninstitutions(PSI,FZK,CEA,SCK-CEN,ENEAandCNRS),JAEA(Japan),DOE(US)andKAERI(Korea)withtheaimtocarryoutanexperiment,intheSINQtargetlocationatPSI(Switzerland),todemonstratethesafeoperationofaliquidmetal(lead–bismutheutectic,LBE)spallationtargethitbya∼1MWprotonbeam.TheEuropeanCommissionhasjoinedtheMEGAPIEprojectthroughthe5-year(2001–2006)projectnamedMEGAPIE-TEST.ThisprojecthasbeenformallyconcludedwithanInternationalWorkshop,wheretheresultsandthelessonslearnedduringtheprojecthavebeensummarised.ThisworkpresentsareviewoftheoutcomeofthatWorkshop.
