Abstract :
CoreexittemperaturemeasurementsplayaveryimportantroleinthedevelopmentandimplementationofSevereAccidentManagementGuidelines.Forexample,thetransitionfromEmergencyOperatingProcedurestotheSevereAccidentManagementGuidelinesmaybetriggeredbycoreexittemperaturesexceedingsetlimits.Coreexittemperaturesmayalsobeusedtodetermineifcorecoolinghasbeenre-establishedwhendifferentmanagementtechniqueshavebeenapplied.However,coreexittemperaturesmaynotalwaysbereliableindicatorsofthestateofthecore.Forthatreason,asystematicstudyoftherelationshipbetweencoreexittemperaturesandthestateofthecorefordifferentaccidentconditionsanddifferentreactordesignshasbeenstartedusingthedetailedsystemthermalhydraulicandsevereaccidentanalysiscodepackage,RELAP/SCDAPSIM.Inthispaper,theresultsofthefirstpartofthestudyispresentedanddiscussed.Thepaperincludes(a)abriefdescriptionoftheRELAP/SCDAPSIMpackage,(b)insightsfromtwofullplantcalculations,aStationBlackouttransientfortheSurryPWRandtheTMI-2accidentanalysis,and(c)theresultsfromaseriesofsensitivitystudiestorelatecoreexittemperaturestocoredamagestatesforidealizedcoreuncovery,heating,andrefloodingscenariosforatypicalPWRfuelassembly.
