Abstract
ThesevereaccidentanalysiscodeSAMPSONisadoptedinthisworktoevaluateitscapabilityofreproducingthecomplexgapcoolingphenomenon.TheALPHAexperimentisadoptedforvalidation,wheremoltenaluminumoxide(Al2O3)producedbyathermitereactionispouredintoawaterfilledhemisphericalvesselattheambientpressureofapproximately1.3MPa.Thespreadingandcoolingofthedebristhathasrelocatedintothepressurevessellowerplenumaresimulated,includingtheanalysisoftheRPVfailure.Themodelincludedinthecodetosimulatethewaterpenetrationinsidethegapisevaluatedandimprovementsareproposed.Theimportanceoftheintroductionofsomemechanisticapproachtodescribethegapformationandevolutionisunderlinedwheretheresultsshowitsnecessityinordertocorrectlyreproducetheexperimentaltrends.
