Abstract :
ThedisposalofspentHTRfuelelementsrequiresarelativelylargevolumeduetotheintegrationoffuelparticlesandmoderatorgraphite.Thiscanbereducedbyseparatingthecoatedparticlesfromthegraphitematrix.However,thecoatedparticlescannotbedisposedwithoutasuitableembeddingorbackfill.Siliconcarbidehasbeenidentifiedasapotentialembeddingmaterialwithlessporosityasisthecasewithgraphite.Therefore,amethodhasbeendevelopedtoproofthetechnicalfeasibilityofembeddingcoatedparticlesinsiliconcarbide.
