Abstract :
Coolantmixinginthecoldleg,downcomerandthelowerplenumofpressurizedwaterreactorsisanimportantphenomenonmitigatingthereactivityinsertionintothecore.Therefore,mixingofthede-boratedslugswiththeambientcoolantinthereactorpressurevesselwasinvestigatedatthefourloops1:5scaledRossendorfcoolantmixingmodel(ROCOM)mixingtestfacility.Inparticularthermalhydraulicsanalyseshaveshown,thatweaklyboratedcondensatecanaccumulateinthepumploopsealofthoseloops,whichdonotreceiveasafetyinjection.Afterrefillingoftheprimarycircuit,naturalcirculationinthestagnantloopscanre-establishsimultaneouslyandthede-boratedslugsareshiftedtowardsthereactorpressurevessel(RPV). IntheROCOMexperiments,thelengthoftheflowrampandtheinitialdensitydifferencebetweentheslugsandtheambientcoolantwasvaried.Fromthetestmatrixexperimentswith0resp.2%densitydifferencebetweenthede-boratedslugsandtheambientcoolantwereusedtovalidatetheCFDsoftwareANSYSCFX.TomodeltheeffectsofturbulenceonthemeanflowahigherorderReynoldsstressturbulencemodelwasemployedandameshconsistingof6.4millionhybridelementswasutilized.OnlytheexperimentsandCFDcalculationswithmodeleddensitydifferencesshowstratificationinthedowncomer.Dependingonthedegreeofdensitydifferencesthelessdenseslugsflowaroundthecorebarrelatthetopofthedowncomer.Attheoppositeside,thelowerboratedcoolantisentrainedbythecoldersafetyinjectionwaterandtransportedtothecore.ThevalidationprovesthatANSYSCFXisabletosimulateappropriatelytheflowfieldandmixingeffectsofcoolantwithdifferentdensities.
