Abstract :
Thepressurehistorieswithinentrappedairbubblesinapipelineduringawaterhammertransientaretreatedtheoretically.Aconvenientintegralmethodisintroduced,whichtakesfullaccountofair/waterinterfacemovementandliquidcompressibility.Thesignificanceofthemethodisthatitprovidesasimpleequationsetforapproximating,withgoodaccuracyandwithasmalldegreeofconservatism,thesolutiontoaproblemthatotherwiseinvolvescoupledpartialdifferentialequationsontimedependentdomainswithnon-linearboundaryconditions.Theaccuracyofthemethodisdefinedbyitscomparisonwithavailablenumerical-solution-predictionsandmeasurementsofthepressurewithinanentrapped-air-bubbleatadeadendinapipe.Themethodisshowntobeacomputationallysimpleandefficientwayofassessingtheimpactofliquidcompressibilityonpressurerisewhenmultiplewatercolumnsandairpocketsarepresentinapipeline.
