Abstract :
Filmboilingheattransfercoefficientsforadownward-facinghemisphericalsurfacearemeasuredfromthequenchingtestsinDownward-BoilingExperimentLaminarTransitionApparatus(DELTA).TwotestsectionsaremadeofcoppertomaintainlowBiotnumbers.Theouterdiametersofthehemispheresare120and294mm,respectively.Thethicknessofallthetestsectionsis30mm.Theeffectofdiameteronfilmboilingheattransferisquantifiedutilizingresultsobtainedfromthetestsections.Themeasureddataarecomparedwiththenumericalpredictionsfromlaminarfilmboilinganalysis.ThemeasuredheattransfercoefficientsarefoundtobegreaterthanthosepredictedbytheconventionallaminarflowtheoryonaccountoftheinterfacialwavymotionincurredbytheHelmholtzinstability.Incorporationofthewavymotionmodelconsiderablyimprovestheagreementbetweentheexperimentalandnumericalresultsintermsofheattransfercoefficient.Inaddition,thefilmboilingwasvisualizedusingadigitalcamera.
