Abstract
Thesecondlawofthermodynamicsstatesthatthecombinedentropyofthesystemandtheenvironmentmustincreaseifaphysicalprocessisirreversible.Irreversiblethermodynamicsdescribeshowthisentropyisproduced.Ifappliedtomultiphaseflowsimulation,irreversiblethermodynamicsgovernsthemodelingofinterphasemassandheattransferandtheboilingprocess.Inthisarticlethefundamentofapplicationisdescribed.Thepresentationisrestrictedtoone-componentsystems,andthesignificanceofOnsagerʹslawisemphasized.Adaptivemodelingallowstheevaluationofkineticcoefficientsbasedonexistingconstitutiverelations.TheapproachisdemonstratedusingRELAP5-3D.EffectsoftheapplicationarediscussedbyanalysisofthefloodingexperimentFLECHT-SEASETTest31504.
