Abstract :
Air–watertwo-phaseflowinhelicallycoiledtubesisinvestigatedexperimentallytoelucidatetheeffectsofcentrifugalaccelerationontheflowregimemapandthespatialandthetemporalflowstructuredistribution.Threekindsoftesttubeswith20mminnerdiametersincludingastraighttubeareusedtocomparetheturbulentflowstructure.Superficialvelocitiesupto6m/saretestedsothatthecentrifugalFroudenumbercoversarangefrom0to3.Theinterfacialstructureisphotographedfromtwodirectionsbyahigh-speedvideosystemwithsynchronizedmeasurementoflocalpressurefluctuations.Theresultsrevealthattheflowtransitionlinealtersduetocentrifugalforceactingontheliquidphaseinthetube.Inparticular,thebubblyflowregimeisnarrowedsignificantly.Thepressurefluctuationamplitudegetslargerelativelytotheaveragepressurelossasvoidfractionincreases.Thefrequencyspectraofthepressurefluctuationhavepluralpeaksinthecaseofstrongcurvature,implyingthattheperiodicityofsluggingtwo-phaseflowiscollapsedbyaninternalsecondaryflowactivatedinsidetheliquidphase.Moreover,underlargeFroudenumberconditions,thesubstantialvelocityofthegasphasethatbiasestotheinnersideofthehelicalcoilisslowerthanthetotalsuperficialvelocitybecausetheliquidflowisallowedtopassthroughtheoutersideandsoresemblesaradialstratifiedflow.
