Abstract
Oneoftheuniquefeaturesofthepebblebedmodularreactor(PBMR)isitsloadfollowingcapability,enabledbyextractingorinjectingofheliumfromortothesystemduringoperation.
Fillingthetankswithaheatsinkwouldreducethenecessarygasstorageareadramatically.Theheatsinkwouldabsorbtheenergythatthehotgascontainsandconsequentlythegaswouldexperienceadecreaseintemperature.Thisimpliesthatthedensityofthegaswillincreaseandallowmoreheliumtobestoredinthesametankbeforethetankʹsmaximumoperatingpressureisreached.
Acomputationalfluiddynamics(CFD)studyindicatedthattheheatsinkinfactreducedthetotalpressureinthetanksignificantly.
Thelargeheattransferareathattheheatsinkprovidesensuresthatthiskindofsystemhasaquickthermalresponse.Inordertomakeoptimaluseofthisadvantage,thegasmustbedistributedevenlythroughoutthetankandnolocalhigh-temperatureregionsmustoccur.Afewinjectionconceptswereinvestigatedtooptimiseforthisrequirement.
