Abstract :
Regulatoryrequirementsprescribeextensiveverificationandvalidation(V&V)ofcomputercodesthatareusedinthedesignandanalysisofaccidentconditionsinnuclearplants.FlownexisadynamicsystemsCFDcodeusedastheprimarythermal-fluidsimulationcodebythePebbleBedModularReactorCompany(PBMR).
Stringentqualityassuranceprocesseshavebeenimplementedtoensurethatthecodeconformstothesetstandards.TheseprocessesincludethecomparisonofFlownexwithanalyticalresultsaswellaswithexperimentaldata.
Theresultsofthisprocessaresummarizedinthispaper.AnalyticalsolutionsareusedtoverifyFlownexʹselementmodelssoastoensurethatthebasictheoryiscorrectlyimplementedinthecomputercode.AspartoftheanalyticalV&Veffortvariouswell-definedproblemsaresolvedusingnumericalmethodsimplementedinindependentcomputercodes.
ComparisonwithexperimentalandplantdataisaveryimportantfeatureoftheV&Vprogramtovalidatethatthechosentheoryisfitforpurpose.Forthis,validationdatafromthepebblebedmicromodel(PBMM)isused.InadditiontothePBMMexperimentaldataFlownexiscomparedtoanumberofsmallthermal-fluidexperimentsinwhichcertainspecificcomponentphenomenaisvalidated.TheseexperimentsweredevelopedincollaborationwithNorth-WestUniversity(previouslyPotchefstroomUniversity).
