Abstract :
ConsideringthecriteriaputforwardbytheGenerationIVForumtoselectfuturenuclearsystems(preservationofresources,minimizationoffinalwasteimpact,economics,etc.),theimpetusfortheveryhigh-temperatureHe-cooledreactorraisestheissueofprocessingthefuelinthecontextofaclosedcyclewithactiniderecycling.Duetotheuniquestructureoftheparticlefuelusedforthisclassofreactors,thedifficultiesessentiallyinvolveaccessibilitytotheuraniumkernelscoatedbycarbonandSiClayersanddispersedinalargevolumeofgraphite.Startingfrompastexperienceinthisfield,aresearchprogramhasbeenrecentlyundertakenbytheCEAtoproposeattractivesolutions.Themechanicalextractionofcompactsfromthespentfuelblocksappearstobeapromisingapproach,aswellasremovingthegraphitefromthecompactsbypulsedcurrentstofreetheparticles.Subsequentremovalofthecarbonandsiliconcarbidelayersbyhightemperatureoxidationorbycarbochlorinationtoaccessthekernelsisassessed.Foractiniderecycling,gelationappearstobeasuitableprocessforfabricatingthekernels.ThispaperprovidesabriefoverviewsofthedevelopmentscurrentlyinprogressattheCEA.
