Abstract :
Oneback-endoptionforspentHTRfuelelementsproposedforfutureHTRfuelcyclesintheECisanopenfuelcyclewithdirectdisposalofconditionedornon-conditionedfuelelements.ThisoptionhasalreadybeenchoseninGermanyduetothepoliticaldecisiontoterminatetheuseofHTRtechnology.FirstintegralleachinginvestigationsatResearchCentreJuelichonthebehaviourofspentHTRfuelinsaltbrines,typicalofaccidentscenariosinarepositoryinsalt,provedthatthemainpartoftheradionuclideinventorycannotbemobilisedaslongasthecoatedparticlesdonotfail.However,suchexperimentswillnotleadtoausefulmodelforperformanceassessmentcalculations,becauseafailureofthecoatingsbycorrosionwillnotoccurduringexperimentaltimesofafewyears.Inordertogetarobustandrealisticmodelforthelong-termbehaviourinaqueousphasesofhostrocksystems,itisnecessarytounderstandthebarrierfunctionofthedifferentpartsofanHTRfuelelement,i.e.thematrixgraphite,thedifferentcoatingmaterials,andthefuelkernel.
