Abstract
ThedecayheatremovalcapabilitiesareanimportantsafetyfeatureofthemodularpebblebedHTR.Itisdesignedinawaythatalsoduringlossofcoolingaccidentsthedecayheatcanberemovedpurelybypassivemeanswithoutexceedingpredefinedtemperaturelimitsforfuelandstructures.Suchaplantdesign,however,yieldslimitationsonthepoweroutput.Thus,fromthethermalhydraulicpointofviewareactorwithmaximumpowerwhichstillobeysthetemperaturelimitsoffuelandcomponents,representsanoptimaldesignofamodularpebblebedHTR.
Inthispaper,designoptionsforamodularpebblebedHTRarediscussedwithrespecttotheircapabilitiesofdecayheatremoval.
Bothpressurizedanddepressurizedlossofcoolantaccidentsareinvestigated.Optimizationofdesignfeaturesisconsideredwithreferencenotonlytothemaximumfueltemperatureduringtheaccidents,butalsotothetemperatureofstructures,mainlythatofthereactorpressurevessel.Itispointedoutthatannularcorescanproducehigherpowerwithoutexceedingfueltemperaturelimits,especiallyduringdepressurizationaccidents.Thisismainlyduetogeometricaleffects.Heatstorageeffectsoftheinnercolumnalsohaveaninfluenceonthemaximumfueltemperaturebyincreasingthetimeatwhichthistemperatureisreached.Whileathermalinsulationofthecoreandthereflectorincreasesthefueltemperature,maximumtemperatureofthepressurevesselandthecorebarrelisdecreased.Thus,carbonblocksrepresentanimportantelementforoptimizationofthedesign
