  • Abstract
    Apsaraisapooltypereactorusinghighenricheduraniumasfuelwithlightwaterascoolantandmoderator.Thereactorisinoperationformorethanfourdecadesandhasbeenextensivelyusedforbasicresearch,radioisotopeproduction,neutronradiography,detectortesting,shieldingexperiments,etc.Inviewofitslongserviceperiod,itisplannedtocarryoutrefurbishmentofthereactortoextenditslifeandforoverallupgradationofitssafetyfeatures.Duringrefurbishmentitisalsoplannedtoincorporatethebasicdesignfeaturesofthemulti-purposeresearchreactor(MPRR)whichisbeingdevelopedatBhabhaAtomicResearchCentre(BARC).ThispapergivesanaccountofdesignfeaturesandsafetyaspectsoftheexistingandmodifiedApsarareactor.
