Abstract
TheFastBreederTestReactorisa40MWt,looptypesodiumcooledfastreactor,builtatIndiraGandhiCentreforAtomicResearch,Kalpakkam,asafore-runnertothesecondstageofIndiannuclearpowerprogramme.ThereactordesignisbasedontheFrenchreactorRapsodie,withseveralmodifications,whichincludetheprovisionofasteam–watercircuitandturbine-generatorinplaceofsodium–airheatexchangerinRapsodie.ThereactorusesahighPumonocarbideasthedriverfuel,andwentcriticalon18thOctober,1985.Beingauniquefuelofitskindwithoutanyirradiationdata,itwasdecidedtousethereactoritselfasthetestbedforthisdriverfuel.Thefuelhasperformedextremelywell,withthepeakburn-upreaching136GWd/tasof31stDecember2004.Thispapergivesadescriptionofthereactorandsummarisestheoperatinghistoryofthereactor.TheoperatingexperienceofFBTRhasprovidedsufficientfeed-backandconfidenceforIndiatolaunchuponthedesignandconstructionofa500MWefastreactor.
