  • Abstract
    AtomicEnergyRegulatoryBoard(AERB)isthenationalauthoritytoensurethattheuseofionizingradiationandnuclearenergyinIndiadoesnotcauseunduerisktothehealthofworkersandmembersofthepublic,andtheenvironment.AERBfulfillsitsmissionbystipulatingandenforcingrulesandregulationsconcernedwithnuclearandradiologicalsafety.ThispaperdescribestheregulatoryauthorizationprocessofAERBasapplicabletonuclearpowerplants(NPPs)duringtheirconstructionaswellasoperatingphases.Thesafetyreviewprocessduringconstructionispresentedascasestudies.Somecurrentissuesrelatedtooperatingplantsarealsodescribed.Twotypicalexamplesofsafetyupgradationsmadeinoldgenerationnuclearplantsaregiven. TheregulatoryprocessinIndiaiscontinuouslyevolvingtocatertothenewdevelopments.SomeoftherecentinitiativestakenbyAERBinthatdirectionarebrieflydescribed.TodayAERBfacesnewchallengeslikesimultaneousreviewofalargenumberofnewprojectsofdiversedesigns,afastgrowingnuclearpowerprogramandfunctioningofoperatingplantsinacompetitiveenvironment.ThispaperdelineateshowAERBisgearingupitselftomeetthesechallengesinaneffectivemanner.
