  • Abstract
    Inthepreviouswork,theauthorsshowedsomedetailedaspectsofthemagnetohydrodynamicinstabilityarisinginanannularlinearinductionpump:theinstabilityisaccompaniedwithalowfrequencypressurepulsationintherangeof0–10HzwhenthemagneticReynoldsnumberislargerthanunity;thelowfrequencypressurepulsationisproducedbythesodiumvorticesthatcomefromsomeazimuthalnon-uniformityoftheappliedmagneticfieldorofthesodiuminletvelocity.Inthepresentwork,anexperimentandanumericalanalysisarecarriedouttoverifythepumpwindingphaseshiftthatisexpectedasaneffectivewaytosuppresstheinstability.Theexperimentaldatashowsthatthephaseshiftsuppressestheinstabilityunlesstheslipvalueissohigh,butbringsaboutadecreaseofthedevelopedpressure.Thenumericalresultsindicatethatthephaseshiftcausesalocaldecreaseoftheelectromagneticforce,whichresultsinthesuppressionoftheinstabilityandthedecreaseofthedevelopedpressure.Inaddition,itisexhibitedthattheintensityofthedouble-supply-frequencypressurepulsationisinnearlythesamelevelinthecasewithandwithoutthephaseshift.
