Abstract
MELCORhasbecomethepreferredcodeoftheSwissnuclearindustryandofPSIforsevereaccidentanalysis,onaccountofitsintegratedsystems-levelapproachandvalidationagainstexperimentsandmoredetailedcodes,whileMACCSiscommonlyusedbysafetyauthoritiesforindependentassessmentofoff-siteconsequences,inparticularhealtheffects.ThepresentworkarisesoutofaprogrammetoassessMELCORindependentlyusingempiricaldataconsistentwiththerecommendationsoftheOECD/CSNIvalidationmatrixforcoredegradationcodes.TheMELCOR1.8.5RDcalculationsarebasedonamodelforphases1and2providedbythecodedevelopersbutwithasimplifiedthermalhydraulicnodingincertainregionsandtheinclusionofasimplerepresentationofthefissionproductreleaseandtransportpathways.Themodelhasalsobeenextendedtosimulatephases3,4,andthecontinuinginitialperiodofcorerecoveryandstabilisation.ThesecalculationsareafirstattempttodemonstrateaMELCOR–MACCScapabilitytosimulatethewholeplantaccidentsequencebeyondphase4,includingthecontainmentresponseandoff-siteconsequencesarisingfromfissionproductreleasefromthecontainment.Emphasisisplacedontheoverallaccidentevolutionandwholeplantresponse,ratherthanthedetailedbehaviour.Resultsarecomparedwithobservedanddeduceddataforthemajoraccidentsignaturesandroughestimatesforexposurebasedonoff-sitemonitoring.TheresultsprovideagoodbasisfortheNPPanalysisforeseen.
