Abstract
TheEPRdesignincludesprovisionstocopewithsevereaccidentsincludingcoremeltsituations:
-
Situationsthatwouldleadtolargeearlyreleasessuchascontainmentbypass,highreactivityaccidents,high-pressurecoremeltorglobalhydrogendetonationhavetobeprevented.

Allothersituations,includinglowpressurecoremelthavetobemitigatedinsuchawaythatthecorrespondingradiologicalconsequenceswouldnecessitateonlyverylimitedprotectivecountermeasuresinarelativelysmallareaandforalimitedtimeforthepopulationlivingintheneighborhoodofthepowerplant.Thismeansthattherewouldbenoneedforpermanentrelocation,noneedforevacuationoutsidetheimmediatevicinityoftheplant,limitedshelteringandnolong-termrestrictionsinfoodconsumption.
Toreachthisobjective,whichisoneoftheSafetyAuthorityʹsrequirements,theEPRreliesonaveryrobustcontainmentandonvariousdesignmeasuresintendedtowithstandextremeloadscausedbyalargerangeofinternaleventsandexternalhazards.ThedeterministicmethodisusedfortheEPRsafetydemonstration,supplementedbyprobabilisticmethodsandappropriateR&Dwork.
Thispaperoutlinesthemajormitigatingdesignfeatures,summarizestheresultsoftheLevel2PSAandgivesthemainresultsoftheevaluationoftheradiologicalconsequencesofcoremeltontheenvironment.
