Abstract :
AtomicEnergyofCanadaLimited(AECL)istheoriginaldeveloperoftheCANDU®reactor,oneofthethreemajorcommercialpowerreactordesignsnowusedthroughouttheworld.Forover60years,AECLhascontinuedtoevolvetheCANDUdesignfromtheCANDUprototypesinthe1950sand1960sthroughtothesecond-generationreactorsnowinoperation,includingtheGenerationII+CANDU6.Thenextphaseofthisevolution,theGenerationIII+AdvancedCANDUReactor™(ACR™),continuesthestrategyofbasingnextgenerationtechnologyonexistingCANDUreactors.BeyondtheACR,AECLisdevelopingtheGenerationIVCANDUSuperCriticalWaterReactor.
Owingtotheevolutionarynatureoftheseadvancedreactors,advancedtechnologyfromthedevelopmentprogramsisalsobeingappliedtooperatingCANDUplants,forbothrefurbishmentsandupgradingofexistingsystemsandcomponents.Inaddition,AECLisdevelopingadvancedtechnologythatcoverstheentirelifecycleoftheCANDUplant,includingwastemanagementanddecommissioning.Thus,AECLmaintainsstate-of-the-artexpertiseandtechnologytosupportbothoperatingandfutureCANDUplants.
ThispaperoutlinesthescaleofthecurrentcoreknowledgebasethatisthefoundationforadvancementandsupportofCANDUtechnology.Theknowledgebaseincludesadvancementsinmaterials,fuel,safety,plantoperations,componentsandsystems,environmentaltechnology,wastemanagement,andconstruction.Ourapproachineachoftheseareasistodeveloptheunderlyingscience,carryoutintegratedengineeringscaletests,andperformlarge-scaledemonstrationtesting.AECLhascomprehensiveR&Dandengineeringdevelopmentprogramstocoveralloftheseelements.
ThepaperwillshowhowtheongoingexpansionoftheCANDUknowledgebasehasledtothedevelopmentoftheAdvancedCANDUReactor.TheACRisaGenerationIII+reactorwithsubstantiallyreducedcosts,fasterconstruction,andenhancedpassivesafetyandoperatingmargins.TheACRisalsothebasisfortheGenerationIVSuperCriticalWaterReactor,whichextendsoperationtohighertemperaturesandpressures.
