Abstract :
Inordertoensuresustainableenergysupplyinthefuturebasedonthematuredlightwaterreactor(LWR)andcomingmixedoxide(MOX)-LWRtechnologies,aconceptofinnovativewaterreactorforflexiblefuelcycle(FLWR)hasbeeninvestigatedinJapanAtomicEnergyResearchAgency(JAEA).Theconceptconsistsoftwopartsinthechronologicalsequence.Thefirstpartrealizesahighconversiontypecoreconcept,whichisbasicallyintendedtokeepthesmoothtechnicalcontinuityfromcurrentLWRandcomingMOX-LWRtechnologieswithoutsignificanttechnicalgaps.Thesecondpartrepresentsthereduced-moderationwaterreactor(RMWR)coreconcept,whichrealizesahighconversionratioover1.0beingusefulforthelong-termsustainableenergysupplythroughplutoniummultiplerecyclingbasedonthewell-developedLWRtechnologies.Thekeypointisthatthetwocoreconceptsutilizethecompatibleandthesamesizefuelassemblies,andhence,theformerconceptcanproceedtothelatterinthesamereactorsystem,basedflexiblyonthefuturefuelcyclecircumstancesduringthereactoroperationperiodaround60years.
