Abstract :
Whenthehotmoltencorecomesintocontactwiththewaterinthereactorcavityasteamexplosionmayoccur.Asteamexplosionisafuelcoolantinteractionprocesswheretheheattransferfromthemelttowaterissointenseandrapidthatthetimescaleforheattransferisshorterthanthetimescaleforpressurerelief.Thiscanleadtotheformationofshockwavesandlater,duringtheexpansionofthewatervapour,toproductionofmissilesthatmayendangersurroundingstructures.
ThepurposeoftheperformedanalysisistoprovideanestimationoftheexpectedpressureloadingsonthetypicalPWRcavitystructuresduringasteamexplosion,andtomakeanassessmentofthevulnerabilitiesofthetypicalPWRcavitystructurestosteamexplosions.Toachievethis,thefit-for-purposesteamexplosionmodelisproposed,followedbycomprehensiveandreasonablyconservativeanalysesoftwotypicalex-vesselsteamexplosioncasesdifferinginthesteamexplosionenergyconversionratio.Inparticular,thevulnerabilityofthesurroundingreinforcedconcretewallstodamagehasbeensoughtinbothcases.
