Abstract :
Deeply bound 1s states of π− as well as the 2p states in 207Pb were identified in the 208Pb(d,3He) reaction at 600 MeV. The binding energies of π− in 207Pb have been determined as Bπ(2p)=5.31±0.09 MeV and Bπ(1s)=7.1±0.2 MeV by comparing the observed Q-value spectrum with theory. These values indicate that the effective π− mass increases by 19.3±2.7 MeV at the center of the 207Pb nucleus.
