Characterizing differential algebraic equationswithout the use of derivative arrays

For a large class of differential algebraic equations with properly stated leading termsand nonsmooth data, an index characterization in terms of the original coefficients and their only first partial derivatives is given. No higher derivatives are used, but several constant rank conditions seem to be essential.
