  • Abstract
A generalized solution approach based on Genetic Algorithm is developed for Network Topology Design in this paper. The problems solved here deal with optimizing those network parameters. that characterize the network reliability. These parameters are diameter, average distance and computer network reliability. The topologies are obtained by optimizing diameter, average distance or computer network reliability under different network constraints. The generalized approach proposed in the paper is also applicable to a wide range of other network design problems such as network expansion and file allocation. Various distributed topology design problems are solved to demonstrate the generality of solution approach. The solutions obtained from this approach are compared with the exhaustive search to validate the quality of solutions obtained.
