Abstract
In thispaper,weproposeareformulationfortheflowshopproblembasedontheconceptofoperation
to workstationflexibility.Whileweassumeafixedsequenceofoperationsinthereformulation,the
“location” ofeachoperationwithintheflowisnotfixed.Theproposedflowshopproblemisimportant
because theeffectiveuseofthisflexibilitycanleadtosignificantchangesinproductionperformance.
Solving theproposedprobleminvolvestwosub-problems:assignmentofoperationstoworkstationsand
sequencing ofthejobs.Wepresentalowerboundprocedureandefficientsolutionapproachestosolve
each sub-problem.Furthermore,animprovementmethodbasedonneighborhoodsearchandsimulated
annealing isimplemented.Asetofexperimentsisanalyzedunderdifferentcombinationsoftheproposed
heuristics achievinghighqualityresults.Theseexperimentsdemonstratethattheheuristicfactorisof
significance fortheproblem.
