Abstract
The max–mindiversityproblem(MMDP)consistsinselectingasubsetofelementsfromagivenset
in suchawaythatthediversityamongtheselectedelementsismaximized.TheproblemisNP-hard
and canbeformulatedasanintegerlinearprogram.Sincethe1980s,severalsolutionmethodsforthis
problem havebeendevelopedandappliedtoavarietyoffields,particularlyinthesocialandbiological
sciences. Weproposeaheuristicmethod—basedontheGRASPandpathrelinkingmethodologies—for
finding approximatesolutionstothisoptimizationproblem.Weexploredifferentwaystohybridize
GRASP andpathrelinking,includingtherecentlyproposedvariantknownasGRASPwithevolutionary
path relinking.Empiricalresultsindicatethattheproposedhybridimplementationscomparefavorablyto
previous metaheuristics,suchastabusearchandsimulatedannealing.
