Abstract :
In thisworkwepresentageneral(monoandmultiobjective)optimizationframeworkforthetechno- logical improvementofbiochemicalsystems.Thestartingpointofthemethodisamathematicalmodel in ordinarydifferentialequations(ODEs)oftheinvestigatedsystem, basedonqualitativebiological knowledge andquantitativeexperimentaldata.Inthemethodwetakeadvantageofthespecialstructural features ofafamilyofODEscalledpower-lawmodelstoreducethecomputationalcomplexityofthe optimization program.Inthisway, thegeneticmanipulationofabiochemicalsystemtomeetacertain biotechnological goalcanbeexpressedasanoptimizationprogramwithsomedesiredpropertiessuchas linearity orconvexity. The generalmethodofoptimizationispresentedanddiscussedinitslinearandgeometricprogramming versions. Wefurthermoreillustratetheuseofthemethodbyseveralrealcasestudies.Weconcludethat the technologicalimprovementofmicroorganismscanbeaffordedusingthecombinationofmathematical modelling andoptimization.Thesystematicnatureofthisapproachfacilitatestheredesignofbiochemical systems andmakesthisapredictiveexerciseratherthana trial-and-error procedure.
